FF7 INTERmission Fort Condor Grandmaster Guide

Game Guide

How to Become a Fort Condor Grandmaster in FF7 Remake INTERmission for PlayStation 5

Fort Condor was originally a bizarre side-quest section of the 1995 Final Fantasy VII in which you’d need to control troops to defend Fort Condor in a miniature RTS-style gameplay section. In this Remake DLC, however, the section has been converted into an interesting strategy board game for which I’ve prepared this FF7 INTERmission Fort Condor Grandmaster Guide.

You will need to become a Grandmaster at the game if you wish to unlock the “Game, Set, Master” trophy. You will also need to do this again on Hard Difficulty for a separate trophy called “Condor Queen”.

You will unlock the Fort Condor board game near the start of Chapter 1 from a young man named Polk as part of the story, you can’t miss him. He will give you your first board and some units which we will upgrade later, but these will do for now.

What you will need to do next is make your way through all 7 Fort Condor players in the game and defeat them all. They get increasingly more difficult with Chadley, the current Grandmaster, being the most challenging opponent.

By paying attention to the weaknesses/strengths of each unit type, you can ensure an easy match. Just let your opponent summon first and then summon a unit to counter theirs. Keep this up until they’re defeated with ease.

Unit TypeWeakness
VanguardRanged
DefenceVanguard
RangedDefence

You can see your opponent’s loadout before a match and identify if they’re using mostly Vanguard, Ranged or Defence. You should set your loadout up based on this information ahead of every match. Don’t forget that some units can only attack ground units, leaving them open to attacks from the air. Try to keep a good balance of units which can handle both ground and air-based units, or just use the loadouts I have listed below.

When destroying an enemy unit, your unit will be able to freely approach the enemy base and destroy it. You and your opponent will both have three bases each. To win a match of Fort Condor, you must either destroy your opponent’s main base (the one in the middle) or simply have more bases than your opponent when the three-minute timer is up.

When you defeat an opponent, you will get tokens which you can spend at Snapper’s store (the old dancing turtle guy with the sign, the same guy who wants the flyers for Turtle-tastic).

Below you can see where to find them and which gear I recommend. Note that all of the opponents are found in the same part of Sector 7 Slums; “Residential Area” and can be defeated back-to-back without any further story progress. Their locations will be marked by a number equal to their level on your in-game map, making them easy to find!

If you see a unit in the suggested loadouts below that you don’t have, visit Snapper to see if you can purchase it with your winnings from the previous matches!

Snapper

Note that “Barracks” and “Facility” units aren’t available right away, but they really are the best units to use. Definitely use them if you’re attempting this on Hard Difficulty for the “Condor Queen” trophy.

Regarding Hard Difficulty:

When playing Fort Condor on Hard Difficulty for the Condor Queen Trophy, you should bear in mind the following things:

  • Opponents on Hard have more ATB than on Easy or Normal
  • Opponents on Hard use more advanced troops
  • To win on Hard you MUST destroy their main base within 3 minutes. If you fail to do so when the timer ends, you will still enter Sudden Death.
  • Sudden Death on Hard is limited to 1 minute long and, regardless of whether you’re winning or not, if you don’t take out their Headquarters before the Sudden Death timer runs out, you will lose automatically.
  • You will want the Grandmaster Board which can be purchased from Snapper after achieving Grandmaster status (on easy difficulty in a past playthrough will count).
  • The Grandmaster Board has one less unit slot, feel free to remove whichever you like from the loadout, whichever works best for you.
  • The Grandmaster Board has an extremely fast ATB charge. Use it to overwhelm your opponents with a constant onslaught of units.

Fort Condor Opponent #1:

Kyrie | Level 1

The starter units/board is fine for this opponent. Kyrie’s loadout is very Vanguard-heavy, but you should be fine with a balanced loadout of all three unit types. Here’s my recommended loadout:

Security OfficerGuard Dog
GrenadierSlug-Ray
Riot TrooperBlast-Ray
Using Starter Board

Hard Difficulty:

Security OfficerE.Riot Trooper
Slug-Ray FacilityRiot Barracks
Armored Shock Trooper
Using Grandmaster Board on Hard Difficulty

Fort Condor Opponent #2:

Johnny | Level 1

The starter units/board is fine for this opponent. Johnny’s loadout is solely focused on Ranged and Defense type units. Here’s my recommended loadout:

E.Security OfficerGuard Dog
GrenadierSlug-Ray
Riot BarracksBlast-Ray
Using Starter Board. The Riot Barracks Unit is found in a chest next to Wedge in the Sector 7 Slums Residential Area.

Hard Difficulty:

E.Security OfficerHelitrooper
Grenadier BarracksSlug-Ray Facility
Elite Grenadier
Using Grandmaster Board on Hard Difficulty

Fort Condor Opponent #3:

Shinra Middle Manager | Level 1

The starter units/board is fine for this opponent. Shinra Middle Manager’s loadout leans heavily towards ranged units. My recommended loadout:

E.Security OfficerGuard Dog
GrenadierSlug-Ray
Riot TrooperSecurity Officer
Using Starter Board

Hard Difficulty:

E.Security OfficerHelitrooper
Elite HelitrooperGrenadier Barracks
Riot Barracks
Using Grandmaster Board on Hard Difficulty

Fort Condor Opponent #4:

Jessie | Level 2

The starter units/board is fine for this opponent, but you should now have the Assassin I board available. If not, it will be in Snapper’s shop now. While visiting the shop, you should get the Slug-Ray Facility unit.

Jessie’s loadout leans heavily towards ranged and defence units. Here’s my recommended loadout:

Security OfficerE.Security Officer
GrenadierSlug-Ray Facility
Guard DogBlast-Ray
Using Assassin Board I

Hard Difficulty:

HelitrooperElite Helitrooper
Grenadier BarracksSlug-Ray Facility
Riot Barracks
Using Grandmaster Board on Hard Difficulty

Fort Condor Opponent #5:

Roche | Level 2

Use the starter board if you like but Assassin Board I is preferable. Roche is where things start to get a little difficult. Roche has a fairly balanced team with an intimidatingly powerful Defence unit to top things off. He likes to place a lot of Helitroopers, so you’ll need a Defence unit that can handle air troops like the Sentry Gun sold by Snapper.

Here’s my recommended loadout for this match:

Security OfficerE.Security Officer
E.Riot TrooperSentry Gun
Slug-RayElite Grenadier
Using Assassin Board I

Hard Difficulty:

Grenadier BarracksSlug Ray Facility
Riot BarracksE.Riot Trooper
Elite Helitrooper
Using Grandmaster Board on Hard Difficulty

Fort Condor Opponent #6:

Wedge | Level 3

You will want some stronger Units (higher ATB cost) as well as the Assassin I board which will increase your ATB recharge. Wedge’s loadout is fairly balanced but with a slight lean towards Ranged and Defence type units. You should have unlocked Grenadier Barracks by now, and should visit Snapper to buy the Cutter unit. Here’s my recommended loadout for defeating Wedge:

CutterE.Security Officer
Grenadier BarracksE.Riot Trooper
Elite GrenadierSlug-Ray
Using Assassin Board I

Hard Difficulty:

Elite HelitrooperHelitrooper
Grenadier BarracksSlug Ray Facility
Riot Barracks
Using Grandmaster Board on Hard Difficulty

Fort Condor Opponent #7:

Chadley | Level 4

You will want some strong units (higher ATB cost) as well as the Assassin I board which will increase your ATB recharge. Chadley is the final opponent and as such is the toughest. His loadout doesn’t feature many units but his use of Barracks units means repeated unit spawns. His loadout leans more towards Vanguard and Defence units.

You should visit Snapper to purchase the Helicopter Defense unit, great for countering the Helitroopers and dealing with Vanguard ground troops. (The helicopter requires too much ATB to be used with the Grandmaster Board)

This is my loadout recommendation for defeating Chadley:

HelicopterE. Security Officer
Security OfficerGrenadier Barracks
Slug-Ray FacilityElite Grenadier
Using Assassin Board I

Hard Difficulty:

You can purchase the Officer Barracks Unit from the “Junk Shop” for 100 Gil. If he doesn’t have it in stock, buy the two units he is selling and then leave to another part of Sector 7 (i.e. Taladagger Factory) and when you return his stock should refresh. Without this unit, his Slug-Ray Facilities will be a big problem.

Riot BarracksElite Grenadier
Grenadier BarracksSentry Gun
Officer Barracks
Using Grandmaster Board on Hard Difficulty

Once all 7 have been defeated, you should unlock the “Game, Set, Master” trophy. If you’re playing on Hard Difficulty, you’ll unlock “Condor Queen”.
