Trophy Guide

Dead Island 2 Trophy Guide and Road Map for PS4 & PS5

Welcome to our Dead Island 2 Trophy Guide. Originally announced in 2014, Dead Island 2 is a semi-open world action game that was developed by Dambuster Studios and published by Deep Silver. It is the sequel to the 2011 hit game, Dead Island. The game is set in California, which has been quarantined due to a mysterious zombie outbreak. You take on the role of a survivor (chosen from a selection of six), who must fight off hordes of zombies while exploring the vast open world. Dead Island 2 offers a fun and immersive gaming experience with its stunning visuals, fast-paced combat, and an intriguing storyline. The game is available on various gaming platforms, including PlayStation 4 and PlaySation 5.

Phase One - Finish The Story

Starting off with Phase One of our Dead Island 2 Trophy Guide the only thing you should really concern yourself with is finishing the Main Quest which has 24 quests in total. You are free to explore and tackle anything you’d like during this phase as it will all help you out later but since nothing is missable in Dead Island 2 you can save it all for the next phase if you’d prefer to just take in the story.

If you’d like to take on more during this phase then there are only a few things you should keep in mind during your playthrough but these are rather minor and can be tackled later. You should vary up which weapons, mods, and skills you use as there are several challenges that require you to kill zombies with Electric, Caustic, or Fire as well as some challenges requiring you to kill a certain amount of zombies with a max Autophage tier. These aren’t necessary to complete right away as you can free roam after the story has finished and you will have access to all areas which helps with challenges that require you to kill a certain Apex Variant.

Lastly, the grindiest challenge of them all is Hollywood Rich List in the Survivor Challenges menu. This challenge requires you to collect a total of $1,000,000 (this is cumulative) which can take a while since your only real method of making lots of money is to sell weapons. I would recommend after you scrap 10 weapons for the first tier of the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle challenge also in the Survivor Challenges menu–to only sell weapons to traders from that point onwards.

There are several Combat Trophies and Miscellaneous Trophies that you are likely to unlock during this phase but don’t worry if you don’t as they aren’t missable and are possibly even easier to unlock during the free roam end game.

However, some Side Quests award you with Legendary weapons also which means this trophy can be unlocked much earlier than the end credits. Regardless of how and when, Ooh, Shiny! is guaranteed to unlock for every player.

Combat Trophies

Coup de Grâce

Slay 25 zombies using finishing moves

Semi-Missable

Cumulative

While fighting Zombies in Dead Island 2 you can knock them to the ground by either deal enough damage to them that they fall over or by staggering them and kicking them with to give them an extra push. Once they are on the ground a button prompt will appear that lets you stomp their head into a pizza sauce consistency.

You can also perform finishing moves by using Counterattacks which happen when you perfectly dodge or block [L1] an incoming attack and a prompt appears on the chest of the attacking Zombie. For my playthrough I played as Amy who as a dodge which allowed me to utilise finishers fairly easy just by dodging backwards in the middle of a Zombie attack which caused them to stumble forward and lurch over allowing me to press . Doing this 25 times will unlock Coup de Grâce.

I Got a Zombie Army and You Can't Harm Me

Perform 25 perfect defensive moves

Semi-Missable

Cumulative

Each of the playable characters in Dead Island 2 have a defensive move–either a Block or a Dodge–mapped to [L1]. Using your defensive ability is crucial to staying alive during combat as Zombie’s can quickly overwhelm you. However, defensive abilities serve as more than just a means to survive as perfect Blocks or Dodges will open the attacker up for a finishing move which you’ll need for Coup de Grâce.

Break a Leg

Maim 100 limbs

Semi-Missable

Cumulative

Most weapons in Dead Island 2 will cause damage to limbs and will often break them. It’s highly unlikely you will finish the story without breaking at least 100 limbs but if you’re worried about it then make sure to use blunt weapons as they seem to break limbs better. However, this trophy popped for me when using a blade so it’s not exclusively blunt weapons that break limbs.

Hazardous Materials

Slay 100 Zombies using Caustic, Fire, or Shock damage

Semi-Missable

Cumulative

One of the most prevalent mechanics in Dead Island 2 is the elemental damage system of which there 3 types; Caustic, Fire, and Shock. You can modify your weapons to apply one of these 3 elements to your attacks to help speed this along or you can use throwables (called Curveballs) which can also have elemental effects. You can also use environmental traps such as whenever you spot a broken hose pipe with a car battery or something electrical nearby. Lastly, there are also some Skill Cards that give you elemental effects. There really are a lot of opportunites to kill Zombies with one of the 3 types so this should unlock naturally and quite early in the main story.

Apex Predator

Knock down 10 Apex Variants

Semi-Missable

Cumulative

Misleading Description

While thi trophy states you need to “knock down” 10 Apex Variants you actually only have to kill them. Apex Variants are mutated Zombies such as the tall muscular Zombies (Crushers), the Acid-Spitting Zombies (Slobbers), or the Screamer Zombies (literally called Screamers) etc. These Zombies are slightly harder to kill than the regular ones but manageable once you have some decent Skill Cards and Weapon Modifications in your arsenal.

There are 11 Apex Variant types in total so you will have plenty of choice when it comes to hunting them down. Apex Predator will unlock after killing your 10th Apex Variant Zombie.

Anger Management

Slay 50 zombies with Fury Attacks

Semi-Missable

Cumulative

You will unlock Fury (activated by pressing + ) after the 14th Main Quest, The Red Mist. Fury is essentially a berserk mode which requires a red circle in the top left corner to fill up before you can activate it. Once in Fury mode you attack with your bare hands in a rapid feral manner and your health will regenerate as long as Fury lasts. This is great for clearing large crowds when you’re in a tight situation. Defeating 50 zombies of any type will unlock Anger Management.

Donk!

Throw a melee weapon and hit a zombie 35+ meters away

Semi-Missable

All of the weapons, apart from the guns, in Dead Island 2 can be thrown as a last ditch way to cause some ranged damage or just to have fun since hurling a flaming katana at a pack of zombies is the coolest thing anyone can do. To throw a weapon you must hold [L2], aim, and then press [R2] to throw the weapon. To unlock Donk! you should find a small group of Zombies, about 3-4, and make sure you remain undetected and then back away to a distance you feel like could be 35m. Aim your weapon–lighter weapons like knives can be thrown further–and throw it. To maximise success it’s best to have a full inventory of light weapons such as knives and kukris so you can throw one and adjust your aim for the next throw should you need to.

Not Even My Final Form

Slay a Mutator before it transforms

Semi-Missable

Mutators are the last of the Apex Variants that you will encounter during the story. They appear as skinny males wearing only brown cargo shorts (no t-shirt) and when you approach them they will mutate into a large creature with an open chest resembling a giant jaw with loads of sharp teeth and one huge arm that they swing around. They kinda look like a cross between something from Resident Evil and the Tallboys from Back 4 Blood. The best method for unlocking Not Even My Final Form is to head to a Mutator spot on the map with a high level rifle and shoot them in the head from a distance. However, it is entirely possible to kill them before they mutate as long as you have a high level and powerful melee weapon as this is how I managed to unlock the trophy.

Miscellaneous Trophies

Bookworm

Collect 50 Journals

Semi-Missable

Collectible

Cumulative

Although this is a collectible, you don’t need to collect all of them for this trophy; only 50 are needed. This is likely an unmissable trophy as you receive quite a lot of Journal Entries just from completing the Main Quests as well as the Side Quests. If you find yourself at the end of Phase One without unlocking Bookworm then you will very likely unlock it in Phase Two when finishing up the Side Quests.

Stacking the Deck

Collect 30 Skill Cards

Unmissable

Skill Cards act are interchangeable skills that modify your character’s abilities in various ways. You unlock Skill Cards mainly through Quest completion with the majority coming from the Main Quest alone which makes Stacking the Deck an unmissable trophy. If you still don’t have it by the end of the story then you will very likely get it during the Side Quests in Phase Two.

This is My Weapon

Fully upgrade a Superior weapon and customize it with a mod or perk in every slot

Semi-Missable

Weapons in Dead Island 2 have varying rarities noted by the background colour of their icons which is identical to other RPGs. Common are Grey, Uncommon are Green, Rare are Blue, Superior are Purple, and finally Legendary are Orange. To unlock This is My Weapon you need to find a Superior (Purple) weapon and put a mod/perk in every slot at one of the many workbenches. By the time you start finding Superior weapons naturally you will have more than enough mods/perks to put one in every slot.

Down with the Sickness

Reach the highest tier of Autophage infection by equipping Autophage Skills

Semi-Missable

Some of the Skill Cards that you can unlock during your time with Dead Island 2 are what’s known as “Autophage Skill Cards”. These cards have very powerful modifiers but come at the risk of reduces abilities or stats. For Down with the Sickness to unlock you must equip 3 Autophage Skill Cards (you can tell them from the other because they have a drippy skull icon at the bottom) to reach the maximum Autophage level.

Zombologist

Unlock every zombie type in the Zompedia

Unmissable

There are many different zombie types in Dead Island 2 and all of them can be viewed in the Zompedia which can give you information on their strengths and weaknesses the more of them you fight. To unlock Zombologist you need to have fought at least 1 of every single type of zombie in Dead Island 2 of which there are 124. This will likely unlock by the end of the story.

Phase Two - Side Quests, Challenges & Grinding to $1,000,000

Phase Two of our Dead Island 2 Trophy Guide will be all about tying up loose ends. This means finishing off the Side Quests, Lost & Found Weapon and Missing Persons Quests, as well as making sure to complete the 1st tier of every challenge.

Side Quests and Lost & Found quests can be tracked from the map screen. This screen shows you how many quests are available in each region and will even let you put a marker on them to guide you to the quest giver/objective.

Challenges are found by pressing and navigating to the Challenges menu lower down the screen. Once you open the Challenges menu you will see a list of Blueprint, Combat, Survivor, Exploration, Weapon, and Zombie sections each with their own list of challenges. When you open a section you can see that each Challenge will have a series of check boxes and to the right a challenge tracker. You only have to complete the 1st tier of the challenge tracker which will mark the right-most check box on the challenge in the list.

The hardest challenge to complete is the Hollywood Rich List in the Survivor section as it requires you to have $1,000,000 dollars (this is cumulative). This can be tricky if you’ve been scrapping all your weapons instead of selling them. In reality you only need to scrap 10 weapons for the 1st tier of a challenge and after that there really isn’t any need to scrap things as there are plenty of materials laying about in the world so it’s best to sell them instead. You should also check your Unclaimed Weapons in your Storage Box from time to time and sell any weapons in there.

LA Influential

Complete 40 non-Story Quests

Cumulative

There are 48 Non-Story Quests in Dead Island 2 split up into 15 Lost & Found quests (6 Weapon Lost & Found, and 9 Missing Persons Lost & Found Quests) and 33 Side Quests. Lost & Found quests appear as red icons and are less guided than Side Quests. When you stat a Lost & Found quest you have to pay attention to the Journals that you pick up as they usually contain clues as to where to go next. Side Quests are more straight-forward and appear as blue icons. LA Influential will unlock upon completing your 40th Non-Story Quest whether it be a Lost & Found quest or a Side Quest.

Go, Bobcats!

Reunite all the VCLA Bobcats

Semi-Missable

Quite early in the story you will come across a woman named Hana trying to get in contact with someone over the radio. This is a 3-part Side Quest series where you will be tasked with finding and helping 3 members of the VCLA Bobcats. The quests unlock periodically during the main story but not one after another so keep an eye on your available side quests every now and then to find and complete the following 3 quests (in order):

  1. The Rav-Ages of Caustic-X
  2. Boz Makes a Bang
  3. Dez and The Monster of Satan
Internet Famous

Complete Amanda's Clickbait quests. You won't believe what happens next!

Semi-Missable

Just like the VCLA Bobcats Side Quests, Amanda Styles (you can meet her when heading back from the Halperin Hotel during the story) has a series of Side Quests that you must complete. These quests are (in order):

  1. #Clickbait
  2. Like and Follow!
  3. Going Viral
Make it So

Help Sarah and Sebastian light a beacon of hope

Semi-Missable

At the Monarch Studios you can meet a woman called Sarah who is an actress from the in-world Space Fox movie. She will ask you to help her and Sebastian out over a series of 3 quests. Upon finishing her quest line you will receive Make it So. The Side Quests in her quest line are:

  1. It Came From Monarch Studios
  2. The Terror of Sound Studio 7
  3. Beacon of Hope
Gore Horse

Help an artist to complete their greatest (and grisliest) piece of art

Semi-Missable

In Beverly Hills you can find a house that has been painted red with a long red streak starting out front on the drive and leading all the way to a locked gate. This house belongs to an artist and a bit later on when you’re working your way through Ocean Avenue you gain the ability to harvest zombie body parts which triggers the artist to spawn and offer you quests. Her quests are simple and only require you to give her a number of each body part you can harvest. The quests are:

  1. Body Art: The Visionary
  2. Body Art: Heft
  3. Body Art: Moist
  4. Body Art: Uproar
  5. Body Art: Vigor
  6. Body Art: Dread
  7. Body Art: The Unveiling
Sharpest Tool in the Box

Complete 5 Lost & Found Weapon Quests

Semi-Missable

Boostable

There are 6 Lost & Found Weapon quests but you only need to complete 5 of them to unlock Sharpest Tool in the Shed. You can do this solo or you can jump into a friends game and complete them with your friends. The added bonus to this–besides having fun with friends–is that any quests you complete with your friends counts towards this trophy. This means that if you jump into a co-op session with 4/5 Lost & Found Weapon quests completed and you help your friends finish another quest then Sharpest Tool in the Shed will unlock for you even if you already finished that quest in your solo session. The 6 Lost & Found Weapon quests are:

  1. The Clean and The Snatch
  2. The Mailman Was a Zombie!
  3. Fool’s Gold
  4. Joe’s Rainy Day Stash
  5. [REDACTED]
  6. Drunk and Disorderly
Sole Survivor

You can do this solo or you can jump into a friends game and complete them with your friends. The added bonus to this–besides having fun with friends–is that any quests you complete with your friends counts towards this trophy. This means that if you jump into a co-op session with 8/9 Lost & Found Missing Person quests completed and you help your friends finish another quest then Sole Survivor will unlock for you even if you already finished that quest in your solo session. Challenge Trophies

Perks of the Job

Complete 5 Blueprint Challenges

Challenging

Cumulative

When you press you can navigate to the Challenges menu and check your progress on all of them. The challenges are split up into categories but for this one you need to only focus on the ones in the Blueprints menu. There are 7 Blueprint Challenges in total but you only need to complete 5 of them. The Challenges are:

Zombicidal Maniac

Complete the first tier of every Combat Challenge

Challenging

There are 26 total challenges in the Combat Challenges section. Most of them will be naturally completed as you progress the story, however, there is one that is quite tricky to pull off. This is the Ninja challenge which requires you to dismember 3 zombies with a single Shuriken throw. The best method I have come up with pulling this off is to have the Meat Bait and Shuriken Curveballs equipped. Find a group of zombies–a Screamer can help spawn a large group–and throw the Meat Bait to get them to get as close as possible and then crouch and throw the Shuriken at their legs. The Challenges are:

  1. Serial Killer – Complete 5 combat challenges
